Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Computed Tomography (CT) is designed for qualified diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers, to support the enhancement of their practice. CT is central to modern diagnostics and treatment planning, and an integral part of the service user’s pathway. As such, radiographers working within CT, must develop an expanding scope of practice, in alignment with the rapidly evolving technological capabilities and complexity of our services.

This course intends to bridge the gap between technical mastery of fundamental concepts and humanistic elements of service delivery, through completion of the two modules: Fundamentals of CT and Service delivery. The Fundamentals of CT module primarily focuses on the physical principles of CT, including clinical applications. The Service delivery module, will look at ground floor service management of a shift, adapting and optimising resources to ensure exceptional patient care and service user focussed services.

In 2023 there was also a Manifesto pledge made by the Prime Minister in which the government committed to replace all CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Mammography equipment over the next ten years. This was reinforced by the need to increase the number of scanners (both CT and MRI) per head of population in the Richard’s Review (2020). CT also plays an essential role in the radiotherapy pathway, being fundamental to radiotherapy planning and subsequent treatment. With the predicted increase in cancer diagnosis over the coming years, advancements in treatment, and increase of image-guided radiotherapy, this is a more prevalent requirement than ever before. With the rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare, this course is well-positioned to develop diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy services to meet the needs of the public.

The course has been designed to align with the College of Radiographers (CoR) Education and Career Framework (ECF) at Enhanced Practitioner level. Therefore, on successful completion of the course, you will have the skills and knowledge to contribute to all four pillars of practice. The postgraduate certificate in CT therefore develops enhanced, practice-led expertise for radiographers working in CT settings.

Lift shaft of the Health and Wellbeing Building

This module will explore the theoretical foundations that underpin CT practice, along with a critical awareness of the relevant legislation that inform safe and effective CT imaging. The module combines physical concepts with clinical applications to enable students to understand how CT systems function, and how these underpin image quality.

This module is designed to enable radiographers working in imaging & treatment services to critically examine the intersection of patient care, service delivery and operational management, supporting the development of both reflective practitioners and effective service leaders.
