Overview

This dynamic course is designed to meet the needs of the artistic and creative industries, and includes a range of practical skills, theoretical knowledge, key transferrable skills and attributes required to forge a successful career in the creative arts sector.

You will have opportunities to engage with and explore a range of different approaches to, and uses of creative artistic practices, and begin to develop a subject specialism that you find the most rewarding. You will be able to develop your practice in a range of contexts, approaches and mediums, such as costume design, illustration, digital content, media make up, photography and community wellbeing. You will engage with industry practice and have opportunities explore and interact with real world situations. You will develop your knowledge, skills and experiences through a range of activities that may typically include:
• Live briefs
• Commissions
• Enterprise activities and projects
• Exhibitions

Whist this is a full-time course, typically this course generally only requires one-two days on campus attendance, supported by self-directed study. This means you can continue to work alongside your studies and balance other commitments.

This course will be delivered from The Place, our new university centre which opened in Great Yarmouth town centre in May 2025.

Experimentation with a range of materials and mark-making techniques will give the opportunity to explore the language of visual arts. You will learn to convey your understanding of formal elements and concepts through diverse methods of visual communication. You will also consider how emerging trends, technology, and personal/artistic sustainability influences your work. Through sharing and discussing ideas with peers and tutors, you will develop personal styles and develop confidence in presenting visual concepts and ideas. This module equips you with the skills to navigate and contribute to the dynamic field of creative arts.

In this module, you will experiment with both traditional and traditional media, exploring a broad range of practical techniques. You will delve into the language of visual arts, learning to analyse and communicate your understanding of formal elements and concepts. You will also examine how trends in the creative industries, as well as technological and entrepreneurial influences, impact your work. Through collaboration of ideas with peers and tutors, you will develop your own personal style and the skills to effectively present visual ideas. In this module, you will research and analyse a success story within your field, evaluating its achievements and challenges and presenting your findings. You will explore how historical influences, legislation, and ethics shape current trends, and consider future developments in design. By reflecting on the social and political contexts of your work, you will enhance your understanding of cultural and social expectations and refine your analytical skills. This module aligns design theory with practical application, preparing you for professional projects that address real-world needs in diverse creative settings.

You will work independently to identify projects that fulfil a specific need or aspiration, which could range from industry-directed tasks to significant academic research. Potential projects could include revitalising a cultural venue, organising a major creative event, or conducting in-depth research on a cultural subject. You will be responsible for managing all aspects of your project, including client engagement, creative execution, and professional considerations like financial management, legal requirements, and ethical standards. An increasing emphasis on theoretically informed practice which requires professional practitioners to be able to reliably access, and implement appropriate research evidence. This ability requires an understanding of the wider context of research methods, concepts and applications that are consistent with the academic and professional requirements to develop both knowledge and skills

On successful completion of the Foundation Degree, you can progress to the one-year BA (Hons) Creative Artistic Practices [Progression Route] to gain your full BA Hons degree* in Costume Design, Illustration, Media Make-up, Digital Creation and Photography; and Wellbeing.
