Overview

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession which sees human movement as central to the health and wellbeing of individuals of all ages. Physiotherapists help to identify and maximise movement potential through promotion of a healthy lifestyle, preventive healthcare, and specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

The innovative new physiotherapy course is fit for the modern, entrepreneurial physiotherapist – encompassing the core areas of cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, neuroscience and physiotherapeutic skills as well as more specialist topics. Our course has excellent links with professionals working in a wide variety of clinical settings, including the NHS, private practice, independent and charitable providers.

Delivered in small classes in the Health and Wellbeing Building, you will have access to two physiotherapy practical labs, ward-based teaching labs, simulation suites and an onsite physiotherapy clinic run by a local physiotherapy provider.

During both university-based teaching and practice placements you will have the opportunity to work and study collaboratively with other health and social care students. Our course has a strong focus on professional and lifelong learning skills, evidence informed physiotherapy practice and research skills.

There are approximately 31 weeks of placement throughout the course, with placement experiences in year 1, 2 and 3 to ensure you get the 1,000 clinical practice hours you need to qualify.

Further information about the University's relationship with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is available in the PSRB register.

As voted for by students, Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2025, winner University of the Year.

In simulated activities you will start to develop a range of essential interpersonal and professional skills. These include maintaining dignity and confidentiality, developing effective observational and communication skills, learning to appreciate cultural and ethical issues, as well as health and safety, such as infection control procedures, acting in the best interests of service users by embedding person centred care.

This module will provide you with fundamental knowledge of typical human movement and the principles underpinning exercise science and physiology

You will learn how to explore and practically apply movement and exercise theory/principles in relation to cases across the lifespan. You will also learn about physical activity and exercise in the context of promoting health and wellbeing in public health. You will learn about theories underpinning approaches used in physiotherapy practice, guidelines and policy related to exercise.

This module will focus on developing your essential musculoskeletal physiotherapy knowledge and skills. This module will provide you with foundational knowledge of the ‘normal’ structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and will develop core clinical sciences knowledge necessary for your ongoing physiotherapy education. You will learn the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology associated with the musculoskeletal system. During this module you will be introduced to common musculoskeletal pathologies. You will learn physiotherapy assessment, treatment, and management skills. This module builds upon the fundamental physiotherapy movement and exercise skills learnt in your preceding module and explores the musculoskeletal system more detail.
