Overview

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme takes great pride in being a popular choice for those interested in pursuing midwifery studies in the eastern region.

The course itself embraces an integrated learning approach, striking a harmonious balance between theoretical education and practical experience. The valuable student support provided by our experienced teaching and practice supervision teams has consistently garnered positive feedback in course surveys.

As a team, we hold our heads high with employment statistics that indicate all students secure employment within six months of completing the course. The School of Nursing and Midwifery is dedicated to embedding the NHS Constitution Values into every facet of our activities. These values serve as the bedrock for the conduct and expectations of both our staff and students, providing guiding principles for our work, whether in theoretical or practical settings. The complete NHS England Constitution and Values can be accessed on the gov.uk website.

The Midwifery training at the University of Suffolk is sanctioned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an approved educational institution. Half of the programme is centred around clinical practice, offering direct contact with women, their infants, and families. This exposure encompasses diverse settings such as homes, communities, hospitals, midwife-led units, and birth centres.

The University of Suffolk is world-class and committed to our region. We are proudly modern and innovative and we believe in transformative education. We are on the rise with a focus on student satisfaction, graduate prospects, spending on academic services and student facilities.

Course Modules

Our undergraduate programmes are delivered as 'block and blend', more information can be found on Why Suffolk? You can also watch our Block and Blend video.

Each semester students will attend blocks of theory (2-6 weeks) and blocks of practice (6-8 weeks). The first year concentrates on essential midwifery skills, anatomy and physiology, communication skills and the nature of professional practice. The focus is on the normal childbearing experience and the knowledge and skills needed to monitor and facilitate this. As the course progresses students will be introduced to more complex aspects of theory and practice associated with childbearing and midwifery practice.

Downloadable information regarding all University of Suffolk courses, including Key Facts, Course Aims, Course Structure and Assessment, is available in the Definitive Course Records.
