New Bloomberg Lab

A new suite utilising Bloomberg financial markets technology is opening at the University of Suffolk this September, giving students on two new courses access to industry-standard tools.

The Bloomberg Lab in the University’s Atrium building features 12 high-specification computers equipped with professional-level software focusing on financial analysis, trading and data skills.

The University’s licence with Bloomberg means the suite can pull through market data, financial news and analytics with a delay of just 15 minutes, allowing students to analyse stocks, companies and markets close to real time.

It will enable students to simulate real-world scenarios and consider portfolio management, trading and risk analysis.

The new suite will be used by students on two new courses launching this September – MSc Financial Technology and BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance.

In addition, students on other courses such as the Suffolk Executive MBA and BA (Hons) Business Management are also likely to have modules taught in the new space.

The set-up will provide modern data and finance resources to the University, allowing course leaders to develop students’ skills in financial services and accountancy.

There is also potential to develop new courses and professional development programmes for students and professionals in future too.

Dr Muhammed Mahmoud, Lecturer in Accounting and Finance and Course Leader for the new MSc Financial Technology course, said: “The Bloomberg Lab provides a significant resource for students on our financial technology, accounting and business courses to gain the industry skills they need to thrive in these sectors.

“With data close to real-time and the analytics capabilities the Bloomberg suite provides, students will gain practical experience to apply their knowledge.”

The new Financial Technology Master’s course will combine practical experience with business knowledge to prepare students for the financial services industry.

The course, which will run as a one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme, will explore the trends, dynamics and challenges of the fin-tech industry, equip students with industry technical skills, and develop problem-solving and global market awareness skills.

The new BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance undergraduate degree has been developed with academics, employers and professional bodies, and has been designed to give learners a comprehensive understanding of the financial sector.

Students on the course can also enjoy placement opportunities and summer internship options too.

Additionally, the University is offering a £1,000 bursary to new entrants on the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance course for home-fee paying, full-time students joining in September 2025.
