Overview
Advanced Clinical Practitioners are experienced clinicians who demonstrate expertise in their scope of practice related to the care of adults, children and families. They combine expert clinical skills with research, education and clinical leadership within their scope of practice. They work as part of the wider health and social care team and across traditional professional boundaries in health and social care and have a high level of autonomy and freedom to make decisions about how people should be cared for in complex and unpredictable situations.
Effective leadership begins with greater self-knowledge and this module will take the student on a journey of self-assessment, reflection and discovery in order to determine their approach to leadership and develop their effectiveness in providing direction and leading and managing others.
- To be introduced to the specified advanced health care practice competencies in the work place encouraging critical thinking about, and creative visioning of, potential future professional role development.
- To critically examine the body of historical and contemporary theory to inform the role of leadership in organisations and health and social care.
- To critically analyse the contextual nature of legislative and political processes which inform and underpin social policy formulation.
- To provide the student with the opportunity to evaluate their own behaviours and personal qualities in relation to leadership and advanced practice, enabling greater personal effectiveness.
- To consider the importance of building capacity in others to develop leadership and innovation throughout the organisation.
This module is a core module on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice. It can be undertaken as a standalone module for those who wish to discover more about leadership in contemporary health and social care systems and wish to become more effective as a leader.
The knowledge and learning is of primary benefit to the individual student as a professional practitioner. They will develop a sharper image of the effectiveness of their person centred practice and its articulation with the health and social care system within which they work.
This module also articulates with the work-based learning thread that weaves different modules of the course into a comprehensive whole. This module will enable the student to integrate, consolidate, recognise and appraise learning achievements relating to their advanced practice role.
