Transferring to the University of Suffolk
If you have studied at higher education level before, or have completed other forms of learning that overlap with the content of your intended University of Suffolk course, we may be able to recognise and award credit for this. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (or RPL) and is commonly used by students wishing to transfer from another University to the University of Suffolk.
Types of Prior Learning
We can recognise two types of prior learning:
- Prior certificated learning (RPCL): learning through a higher education or training provider that has been formally assessed, recognised and/or certificated.
- Prior experiential learning (RPEL): learning that has been achieved through experience and/or training that has not been formally assessed (for example through paid or unpaid work, self-directed learning or other life experiences).
For further information on RPL and how to apply for recognition, please see the University's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy.
Undergraduate Applications
To start the process of transferring to a University of Suffolk Undergraduate degree, please apply via UCAS as normal. Once you reach the section of the application where you select the course(s) you wish to apply for, please indicate that you wish to have prior learning recognised by amending the year of entry, as follows:
- Year 2 = level 5
- Year 3 = level 6
Postgraduate Applications
If you are applying for a postgraduate degree, please apply via our direct application form as normal and add a note to your personal statement to explain your wish to have prior learning recognised.
What happens next?
Once they have received your application, our Admissions team will be in touch via email to request additional information, such as certificates, transcripts and course information. So please remember to check your email (and Junk/Spam folder). This will enable us to decide whether your prior learning can be recognised. If your previous study is not current, then a second request for additional information, such as a CV, may be sent to you.
If you wish to use prior experience to support advanced entry, you will need to provide a portfolio of evidence to map your experience against an appropriate module within the course you wish to study, then the Course Leader for your intended University of Suffolk course will support you in completing the RPEL application form. In the first instance, we would encourage you to reach out to the Course Leader to discuss the process, as they can advise you on gathering a portfolio of supporting evidence.
You can also have a look at our Campus Tours and Accommodation options if you want to learn more.
