Civic Suffolk: A University for the Community

The University of Suffolk has at the heart of its mission a responsibility to be a model for a new type of civic university – embedded, influential and a focus of societal and economic change in all the communities it serves.

Being civic means supporting, collaborating with, and serving the local community, and this initiative is designed to enhance our community engagement across the County, fostering meaningful collaborations and partnerships with local communities, businesses, and public sector organisations.

Our pledges to Suffolk

To reaffirm our commitment to the region, we have set out a series of pledges in a Civic University Agreement. These pledges seek to not only address the key regional challenges we face, but to also ensure we work together with local communities on projects informed by them that drive positive change to improve the lives of residents, whilst preserving and celebrating the culture and heritage of Suffolk.

Pledges

We pledge to work in partnership with local community groups, public services and charities on projects informed by them that address social and health inequalities, celebrate diversity and increase public safety in Suffolk.

  • Collaborate on community-led projects that directly address health inequalities, enhance wellbeing, reduce crime, and advance social justice.
  • Champion Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion by removing barriers to participation and empowering underrepresented groups to thrive.
  • Drive initiatives that strengthen public safety, build social cohesion, and celebrate the rich cultural life of our region.

We pledge to create opportunities for work and learning by partnering with local employers on placement opportunities and lifelong learning programmes tailored to the needs of our county.

  • Provide meaningful work placements, apprenticeships, and internships in partnership with regional employers to prepare our students for the world of work
  • Co-design and deliver education and lifelong learning programmes that directly respond to the needs of our local labour market and evolving industries
  • Partner with communities and employers to co-create training that open doors and builds lasting opportunity

We pledge to use University expertise to deliver research that supports local priorities, and exchange ideas with the community to drive measurable, collaborative impact across the region.

  • Deliver research that is locally rooted and nationally and globally recognised, tackling the real-world social, economic, and environmental challenges facing Suffolk
  • Bring knowledge to life through public engagement, connecting communities with ideas, innovation, and meaningful dialogue
  • Collaborate on climate-focused research, policy, and green innovation that accelerates our region’s transition to a low-carbon future

We pledge to offer our facilities to community groups and prioritise working with local service providers, supporting start up and small organisations as well as established local businesses.

  • We will offer our facilities as a convening space for community organisations, fostering a hub of civic and cultural activity
  • We commit to actively seeking supplier partnerships with local organisations, SMEs, graduate start-ups and our alumni community

We pledge to empower our University staff and students to volunteer and support civic and sustainability initiatives across Suffolk.

  • Help our staff, students, and alumni to volunteer, mentor, and lead in community and sustainability projects that create meaningful local impact, working alongside charities, social enterprises, and community leaders to tackle shared challenges.
  • Support and scale university-led civic initiatives that deliver measurable, inclusive change across our town, coastal, and rural communities.

Our Story

SU Social Space window

Development of our civic university agreement began in 2023, following a consultation project led by Dr Cristian Dogaru. A series of consultation events were held with the public, stakeholders, staff and students and our key regional partners to help inform the Civic University Agreement’s guiding principles.

  • community roots and engagement
  • embedding the civic university principles into teaching and research
  • bringing organisations together
  • improving communication and visibility

In April 2024 we launched our initial Civic University Agreement along with our Economic Impact Assessment, setting out a series of pledges to our communities to address the key regional challenges we face and drive positive change.

These pledges are continually reviewed and refined by us and our co- signatories to ensure that our commitments strive to always be representative of our regional needs, which has given us the five clear, focused pledges we have today.

Our Partners

Our civic role is predominantly a team role and many of our partners have contributed during the development of the project. Their ongoing commitment and support are of significant value to the University and our region.
