Sustainability Policies and Plans

Access our latest sustainability policies, plans, and action plans, which actively guide and inform our work. For questions or feedback, please email: sustainability@uos.ac.uk.

Definitions:

  • A policy is the highest-level document
  • A plan describes how we will implement that policy
  • An action plan describes the actions we're taking to implement the policies and plans

The following are the highlights and are not an exhaustive list. For all targets, please refer to the policies, plans, and action plans.

Biodiversity

  • All capital projects need to have a minimum of 10% at habitat green space/ uplift on campus, based upon the square meterage of the area being included in the refurbishment
  • Organise and lead on campus volunteering wildlife sessions 6x annually, working in partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation degree students

Emissions

  • By 2030: We aim to achieve carbon neutrality for our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions (including onsite energy use and purchased electricity)
  • By 2050: We aim to achieve net zero for all remaining scope 3 emissions, such as business travel, procurement, and wider supply chain activity.

Waste management

  • Work toward a zero waste policy, defined as 5% or less going to landfill by 2030,
  • Reduce by 30% tons of total waste produced by 2027 against 2021 baseline,
  • Reduce by 60% tons of total waste produced by 2030 against 2021 baseline, and
  • Zero waste diverting 95% of waste away from landfill and incineration.

Construction and refurbishment

  • New buildings to be developed to net zero standards, or any acquisition of existing buildings in the future, is to be accompanied by a budgeted plan for ensuring compliance with net zero standards.
  • LED program across remaining estate – all buildings to have efficient lighting by 2030, reducing pressure on electrical distribution infrastructure to accommodate energy efficiencies and electrification of heating.

Travel and transport

  • Achieve a 5% reduction by 2030 in carbon emissions associated with business travel and University fleet operations (Scope 3) from baseline 2024/25.
  • Using the University's submission to the 2024 Suffolk County Council's Travel Data as a baseline, aim to achieve modal shifts in the following by 2030: a) walking/ wheeling from 42% to 44%; b) cycling/ e-cycling from 4% to 11%, c) bus (including park and ride) from 14% to 17%, d) rail from 10% to 12%, e) car sharing/ passenger from 9% to 11%, and f) decrease single driver car use from 53% to 43%.

Sustainable procurement

  • A commitment to net zero is required for all suppliers with a contract value above £5m (excluding VAT) to adhere to sustainable sourcing practices, reduce waste, eliminate single-use plastic, and minimise resource extraction.

Water

  • By 2050: We aim to achieve net zero across all remaining Scope 3 emissions.
