A senior leader for the environment and sustainability at Sizewell C has been appointed as a senior research fellow at the University of Suffolk’s Sustainability Institute.

Dr Peter Bryant, Head of Environment, Decommissioning and Radiation Safety at Sizewell C, will focus on the future of sustainability policy and regulation in his role at the Institute.

His Senior Fellow role will include academic research support, including being the main contact for energy and environment research and development within Sizewell C, as well as being involved in the development of new apprenticeship routes in sustainability.

Dr Bryant has extensive knowledge of sustainability, nuclear and radiological safety and policy, decommissioning planning and environmental management, and is leading on integrating sustainable and low-carbon decision making into international nuclear policy and regulation, using the Sizewell C project as a test case.

He has previously lectured on radiation and environment protection at a number of universities, was President of The Society for Radiological Protection for two years from 2019 to 2021, an editorial board member of a science journal, and published various peer reviewed papers and a book on the energy sector.

In addition, he is an invited member of a number of international policy and standards groups including the global policy forum, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Expert Group on International Recommendations and its subgroup on environment and sustainability.

Dr Peter Bryant, Senior Fellow at the Suffolk Sustainability Institute, said: “There are so many exciting elements to the Sizewell C project, but getting to work on building the knowledge and future generation of environmental and sustainability practitioners is one of the highlights of my role.

“I can see the gap we have in the UK around environmental and sustainability resource, and this is only going to become increasingly more important, so the work here at the Institute will be vital in addressing those needs.”

Professor Darryl Newport, Director of the Suffolk Sustainability Institute, warmly welcomed Dr Bryant to the team and highlighted the invaluable expertise he brings to the Institute's mission. The Institute is dedicated to delivering high-quality research and training in areas related to green infrastructure, sustainable and healthy communities, and efficient energy and resource management.

Parts of Dr Bryant’s work will link up with what was laid out in the University’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sizewell C.

The MoU includes collaborating on future curriculum and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as peer-reviewed research projects investigating the wider social, economic, environmental and community impacts of Sizewell C.
