Join us for a hands‑on, free family‑friendly workshop and discover the hidden world of bats!

All ages are welcome, children must be supervised by their parent or guardian. Led by staff and students from the University of Suffolk.

Create your very own 384Hz ultrasonic bat detector that lets you hear and record real bat calls right from your smartphone. No experience needed, we’ll guide you through beginner‑friendly hotplate soldering to assemble your microphone step by step.

Once built, your device becomes a fantastic tool for exploring local wildlife. Head out on walks, visit parks, listen in your garden, or even join formal surveys. You’ll be part of a growing community science initiative helping monitor biodiversity and track bat populations across East Suffolk, empowering residents to contribute meaningful ecological data.

The workshop is led by Dr Hannah Steventon and Dr Mark Bowler from the University of Suffolk, who will share insights into bat behaviour, conservation, and the exciting research happening locally. Find out more about our BSc (Hons) Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation Science.

The bat detector kits for this workshop are generously sponsored by the East Suffolk Council Community Fund.
