Nikki Swan is an Adult Nursing Lecturer with a background in Emergency Department nursing, medical day units and practice education. She is passionate about delivering clear, confidence‑building clinical skills teaching and creating supportive environments where students feel safe to ask questions, challenge themselves and experience those rewarding moments when understanding finally clicks. Nikki also teaches the Law, Ethics and Politics module and brings a warm, inclusive approach to helping students develop their unique professional identities.

Outside of her academic role, she is an avid gardener and plant enthusiast, often found tending to her ever‑expanding collection of houseplants or nurturing her garden - cultivating growth both inside and outside the classroom.

Nikki has extensive experience in both pre and post‑registration education, supporting learners across simulation, classroom and practice settings. She has a strong track record of teaching and preparing internationally recruited nurses for OSCE assessment and transition to NMC registration. Nikki integrates technology‑enhanced learning into her teaching and promotes psychologically safe, inclusive learning environments, supported by her training as a Mental Health First Aider, Wellbeing Ambassador and her completion of LGBTQIA+, Disability and Neurodiversity Awareness programmes. She also holds a multitude of additional clinical qualifications, such as Advanced Life Support (ALS).

Nikki’s interests include technology‑enhanced learning, inclusive clinical education and how structured challenge supports confidence and professional growth. She is particularly interested in digital and blended learning approaches that strengthen clinical competence and preparedness for practice. She is committed to evidence‑informed practice and aims to contribute to scholarship that strengthens the quality of nurse education.

Nikki has worked extensively with NHS partners to support workforce development, leading on clinical‑induction restructuring, clinical‑skills training and targeted educational support for both internationally educated and UK‑educated nurses. She has led and contributed to trust‑wide education programmes, quality‑improvement initiatives and the creation of digital learning resources, strengthening staff readiness and patient safety. Post‑implementation evaluation demonstrated significant improvement in learner confidence, preparedness and satisfaction, highlighting the positive impact of these changes.

Nikki welcomes opportunities to collaborate with external organisations on projects that enhance clinical‑education pathways, promote both staff and student development and support high‑quality healthcare provision across local services.

Nikki has significant experience supporting internationally recruited nurses through tailored clinical skills education, OSCE preparation and structured induction. She is open to international collaboration in nurse education.
