David Upson-Dale is the Research Repository and Open Access Compliance Manager within the Department of Learning Services. The role has developed over the last few years to meet the needs of the growing research culture at the University of Suffolk. David has previously worked in a number of roles within learning services. Beginning as a library assistant in 2004

Prior to joining the university David achieved a number of qualifications in graphic design and illustration including a BA (Hons) in Design Communication. In another life he worked as a freelance illustrator and he continues to engage in personal creative projects when the mood strikes.

David's areas of experience are predominantly within research support, open access compliance, copyright guidance and systems management.

David manages the institutional research repository OARS (Open Access Repository Suffolk), offering guidance to staff around depositing of materials, advice on OA/REF requirements/compliance criteria, he corresponds with publishers to establish archiving permissions for research outputs, and supports open access funding via institutional agreements with various publishers.

David also manages the digitisation service and offers copyright guidance, performs module audits for copyright compliance, and assists students by overseeing production of accessible materials based around any reasonable adjustments in place.

David is passionate about supporting his colleagues in his role, and is excited to see the continued growth of UOS as a research focussed institution.
