This course is designed to enhance the understanding and delivery of meaningful, high-quality maternity care tailored specifically for autistic and neurodivergent people.

This course will be facilitated by Karen Henry, Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Suffolk.

The course learning outcomes are:

  • To explore autism and neurodiversity from a medical and social perspective.
  • To consider the impact of diagnosis, misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis for girls and women.
  • To gain an awareness of autism, poor mental health and co-occurring health conditions.
  • To gain an understanding of autistic women’s experiences of the perinatal period including birth and breastfeeding.
  • Consider the design of inclusive, accessible healthcare environments.
  • Explore resources to support midwifery practice.
  • Consider the wider needs of neurodivergent family members.

The session will also include a light buffet lunch and refreshments.
