Introduction to Pharmacy
Step into the world of pharmacy and discover that there is far more to the profession than dispensing medicines.
An unusual illness is spreading through the fictional town of Northvale, and students must become pharmacist investigators to solve the mystery. Working in teams, they will use clues, “patient” information and laboratory data to identify the likely cause of the outbreak and advocate for the most appropriate treatment and method of delivery. This session can be delivered either on campus or at a school or college. On-campus session includes a practical activity in which students isolate DNA from a banana as a piece of classified evidence. The session may include shorter activities highlighting other facets of pharmacy, including the Treatment Challenge, Who Wants to Be a Pharmacist? and Spot the Fake Medicine.
Along the way, students will explore how pharmacists contribute to drug discovery and medicine development, from identifying biological targets and evaluating potential treatments to considering safety, formulation and patient care.
