The University of Suffolk welcomed Joshua Rozenberg KC, the country’s leading legal commentator and journalist to speak at its third annual law lecture on Tuesday 18 November.
Before the event, Joshua Rozenberg met with law students at the University to answer their questions about his exciting career, including why he chose to become a legal journalist after qualifying as a solicitor.
During the Q&A event, Joshua spoke about some of the nationally significant cases he covered in his 15 years as the BBC’s legal correspondent, the impact of US President Donald Trump threatening to sue the BBC, and the newly released government policy paper on immigration rights.
Other topics discussed included the role and dangers of artificial intelligence in the legal sector and the potential impact of last year’s law lecture speaker, Sir Brian Leveson’s independent report on the criminal justice system.
The event, titled A Question of Law, was hosted by the University of Suffolk’s Legal Advice Centre in partnership with the Suffolk and North Essex Law Society and was sponsored by law firm Ellisons.
Joshua Rozenberg said: “It’s important to meet people going into the law profession to understand their concerns and the issues they face as they embark on a career in the legal sector.
“My advice to students is to be aware of the industry challenges, make yourself stand out from the crowd and take opportunities when they are presented.”
Eleanor Scarlett, Director of the University of Suffolk Legal Advice Centre and Senior Lecturer in Law, said: “Our annual law lecture has established itself as the must-attend event for those interested in the inner workings of our legal system. Our students are heavily involved in the planning and benefit from meeting with some the leading names in the sector.
“On behalf of the University of Suffolk, the Suffolk and North Essex Law Society and Ellisons, I would like to thank Joshua Rozenberg KC for his time and for sharing so much from his distinguished career with our students and guests.”
Guy Longhurst, Managing Partner at Ellisons, said: “We’re really proud to support the University of Suffolk’s annual law lecture and to help bring the legal community together for such an inspiring event. As a firm rooted in this region, we’re passionate about nurturing future talent and supporting the businesses and individuals who make Suffolk such a fantastic place to live and work.”
In 2023, the inaugural law lecture was presented by Lady Hale, former President of the Supreme Court, with renowned judge Sir Brian Leveson taking to the stage in 2024.
