Global Leader Training and International Exchange Programme
Understanding global nursing provisions in collaboration with Keio University, Japan
As part of the University of Suffolk’s nursing programme, the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health are delighted to select students each year to take part in the Global Leader Training and International Exchange Programme hosted Keio University, Japan.
The programme offers selected students the opportunity to travel to Japan and join other nursing students from Korea, China, Singapore, the UK, the USA and Palestine for a 5-day conference.
Nursing students participate in lectures, observations, group activities and visit hospitals and healthcare facilities within the region. The programme offers a wonderful opportunity for nursing students to immerse themselves into Japanese culture and foster a global perspective via the sharing of ideas and experiences.
The Keio University visit
The School of Health, Sciences and Society was delighted to host 12 Nursing students and 3 staff members from the Faculty of Nursing & Medical Care at Keio University, Japan.
During their visit, the Keio students engaged in a rich programme of academic and practical activities, including lectures, clinical skills sessions, and visits to our local practice partners. Lecture topics included the Nursing Curriculum, Public Health, Children’s Services, Care in the Home, and Midwifery in the UK. Students also had the opportunity to enhance their clinical skills using our simulation facilities and manikins. To provide real-world context, the programme included visits to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), and St Elizabeth Hospice. The visit concluded with insightful student presentations comparing healthcare and nursing education systems in the UK and Japan.
Beyond the academic schedule, students immersed themselves in British culture. Highlights included tasting traditional fish and chips, trying scones, and visiting the historic city of Cambridge. They were also eagerly anticipating a trip to London.
Looking ahead, students from the nursing programmes at the University of Suffolk will have the opportunity to take part in the Keio Short-Term Nursing and Medical Care Studies Programme at Keio University, Japan in February 2026.
