Guide to Customs
When you arrive at the UK border you will find there are queues at immigration control.
One is for the European Economic Area (EEA & Swiss) nationals and another is for non-EEA nationals. Ensure you join the correct queue.
Your passport will be checked by a Border Force Officer, along with your immigration permission and any other documents. You may be asked a few questions, have your fingerprints checked and/or be interviewed before you can pass through immigration. We would always recommend that you are prepared, polite and patient.
When you enter the UK on a Student visa, the Border Force Officer must check that you speak English at the required level, without needing an interpreter.
You should ensure you carry all relevant documents, including:
- Passport (linked to your UKVI account)
- eVisa (accessed using your UKVI account)
- Offer letter from University of Suffolk
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter from University of Suffolk
- Evidence of your finances
- Details of your accommodation
EEA and Swiss citizens as well as citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the USA can use the eGates.
More information on entering the UK can be found on the UKCISA and Gov.uk webpages.
After you have collected your luggage you must go through customs control and join the appropriate queue:
Green channel - if you have nothing to declare
Red channel - if you have items to declare
Blue channel - if you have arrived from an airport within the European Union (EU) where you have already cleared all your baggage through Customs Control.
Now, all you have to do is make your way to the University. Follow our guide to getting here for further guidance!
