New course to support next generation of zoo professionals

The University of Suffolk, in collaboration with Colchester Zoological Society (CZS), is launching a new course that will support students looking for a career in conservation and zoo management.

The BSc (Hons) Zoo Science and Management will launch in September 2027 and will combine academic learning with real-world experience. Students will work closely with the team at CZS, one of the UK's leading conservation zoos, while developing the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly changing sector.

Modern zoos play a critical role in wildlife conservation, scientific research and education and the new course will explore all of these areas as well as management and leadership, visitor engagement and animal behaviour. Students will also learn about the role that technology and research plays in zoos, conservation and the wider sector.  

The course will be delivered in partnership with the team at CZS, with students spending approximately half their time on campus in Ipswich and the other half on site at Colchester Zoological Society.  

In addition, students will have access to optional field trips, including visits to a number of UK zoos and wildlife parks to develop their knowledge and build their professional networks. In the final year, students will have the option of choosing to join a residential trip to the Umphafa Nature Reserve in South Africa which is managed by the Colchester Zoological Society.  

The University of Suffolk already runs a successful Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation Science course and students on both courses will have the opportunity to work together to explore a broad range of topics.

Through the course, students will have access to work placements, allowing them to develop and enhance their practical experience and support their career journey.

Staff at Colchester Zoological Society and other wildlife organisations will be able to access a selection of modules on the BSc (Hons) Zoo Science and Management course as part of a professional CPD programme.
