Introduction

To be an expert in sport psychology, your university needs to provide you with the latest research informed knowledge, and practical experience using world-leading technologies. You also need an educational environment that reflects the real sporting world.

This course has been developed in consultation with our professional sport partners. This means your education will benefit from exceptional knowledge and standards, preparing you for your professional life after you graduate.

The professional sport psychologist supports all the psychological needs of their athletes, and often across sport teams and organisations. They can work with individuals on a case-by-case basis, and support and nurture effective group dynamics to improve individual athlete, player or overall team performance.

As well as supporting improvements in performance, the psychologist also specialises in helping athletes, players and teams deal with common competitive sport issues, including dealing with defeat, injury, hostile environments and group cliques.

The degree is designed to provide you with the very latest scientific learning, to help prepare you to successfully pursue all of these exciting, challenging and rewarding career roles.

We are a global university partner of STATSports, whose clients include countless world famous sports teams. You benefit from this relationship thanks to our use of cutting-edge equipment.

The course is led by experienced academics, who have supported Olympic and professional athletes, successfully enhancing their performance. Under their guidance, you learn from an approach that combines knowledge of psychology and counselling, with other relevant sport and exercise sciences.

Our students enjoy brilliant access to world-leading research and professional practice equipment. These are based in our modern Human Performance Laboratory, based right on the waterfront in the James Hehir Building. As well as being a global university partner for both STATSports and Qualisys, for sports global positioning systems and human motion capture technologies, you will enjoy full use of electroencephalograms and other neurological, biofeedback and neurophysiological apparatus (used to assess a variety of psychological functions in athletes), cardiopulmonary exercise apparatus (used to assess cardiac and metabolic function of athletes), and blood, saliva and urine analysis (used to assess things like hormone concentrations in athletes). There are many other types of specialist equipment, and we pride ourselves on giving you access to all of our specialist equipment.

You get to personally use everything in our Human Performance Laboratory during your studies (not just watch us demonstrate it). You will learn by doing!
