This module aims to provide you with an introduction to anatomy and physiology. The emphasis of this module will be based upon normal biological function. It will enable you to have a clearer understanding of anatomy and physiology and will therefore aid the development of problem-solving skills in practice.
The emphasis of this module will be on human structure, function and homeostasis as a basis for physiological health. The module aims to provide you with a sound knowledge base from which to build upon throughout the course.
The aims of this module are to provide you with a sound foundation on which to develop key transferable skills including communication; information technology; problem solving; numeracy; working with others; and, risk management and reflection. These skills will give you confidence and raise your self-esteem enabling them to work and learn effectively within both the higher education and the workplace environments. It will also explore what it means to be a registered professional, and introduce the role of the student paramedic, exploring the physical, mental and practical applications of the role in preparation for practice.
Paramedics frequently encounter patients experiencing acute mental health crises, trauma, and distress. In addition, exposure to high-stress situations, moral injury, and trauma can significantly affect paramedics’ wellbeing. This module examines the complex social, psychological, and behavioural factors that impact patients during a mental health crisis, highlighting the paramedic’s role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered, and collaborative care. It also recognises the personal impact of the paramedic role, focusing on resilience, empathy, and reflective practice as essential for sustaining wellbeing and professional effectiveness. By exploring these dimensions, the module will underpin holistic care while supporting the student to navigate the demands of contemporary healthcare.
This introductory practice module provides you with their first exposure to professional paramedic practice in a range of supervised clinical environments. You begin to apply theoretical knowledge, develop basic clinical skills, and demonstrate appropriate professional behaviours under direct supervision.
This module will develop your understanding of the principles of pharmacology and the related legal and ethical issues. The module will explore cell biology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and their relevance to health care practice. Service user issues relating to medicine therapy will be examined and the responsibilities of the paramedic in relation to these in the context of professional practice, underpinned by safe administration of medicines.
The inclusion of the Public Health & Well‑Being module responds directly to the evolving role of the paramedic as both a clinician and a public health advocate. Modern paramedic practice now extends well beyond emergency response and includes contributing to population-level health outcomes, supporting resilience, and managing community-based health risks. Paramedics are increasingly recognised as accessible healthcare professionals with opportunities to influence health behaviours at the point of care. Whether engaging with underserved populations, signposting to preventative services, or delivering brief interventions, paramedics play a critical role in improving health equity. Embedding public health theory and practice early in the curriculum ensures graduates can identify wider determinants of health, apply behaviour change techniques, and support long-term patient wellbeing in both urgent and unscheduled care.
This module builds upon the knowledge and skills gained in the Year 1 Paramedic Practice: Fundamentals of Patient Assessment & Treatment, enhancing your ability to assess and manage more complex cases. Emphasis is placed on developing critical decision-making, differential diagnosis, and safe, evidence-based care planning for patients with acute illness, trauma, or comorbidities. you will consolidate theoretical knowledge through supervised simulation , while also reflecting on their developing role as practitioners.
This module will provide an opportunity for the student to produce an individual study project developed from an aspect of paramedic practice in which they are particularly interested. It will enable students to further develop skills acquired throughout the programme such as enquiry-based learning, problem solving, critical thinking and reflection. Using a problem-solving approach students will engage with the principles of the systematic literature review to further their understanding of the evidence base and its application to practice. The dissertation module will provide a mechanism by which students will be able to demonstrate autonomy and self-direction whilst undertaking a problem-solving exercise within a topic area of their choice relevant to paramedic practice.
The module will build on previous study undertaken by students during Research Methods at level 5. Students will, therefore, already have the basic skills to undertake a literature search, review the literature and critically evaluate published research.
This final practice module consolidates your development, focusing on readiness for autonomous professional practice. You are expected to demonstrate confident clinical decision-making, leadership, and accountability while delivering evidence-based, patient-centred care across a wide range of pre-hospital and urgent care situations. Emphasis is placed on managing complex and unpredictable cases, applying sound clinical reasoning, and demonstrating the professionalism required for transition to qualified paramedic practice.
