Applying for a BA (Hons) in English and History as a mature student, Shiela lacked confidence in her ability to succeed academically. However, she found that the teaching staff were always available to clarify anything she was unsure of and took the time to provide tutorial support with writing skills and give detailed feedback on her assignments. She comments
‘This supportive ethos runs like a vein through the University; everyone from the parking attendants to the library staff to the catering ladies were extremely welcoming and supportive.’ ‘The teaching and resources at the University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College always met my high expectations. What is more, my cohort were a friendly group comprised of mixed backgrounds, ages and abilities who always felt able to debate topics during our lectures and support each other when things got tough. For these reasons and many more, I would highly recommend the university as a place to embark on your next steps.’
Shiela achieved a First Class Honours degree and is currently on a Teacher Training scheme with the only ‘outstanding in all areas’ SCITT provider in the East of England. After this she hopes to teach English part time and to take a two-year MA programme in History at the Institute for Continuing Education, University of Cambridge.
