I chose to study Event and Leisure Management as I am an active person and wanted to study and have a career in something I am truly passionate about.
The breadth of knowledge and experience I gained during my degree helped me enormously into deciding the industry I wanted to focus my career on upon graduating.
My placement in the final year of my degree into events with Ipswich Borough Council was the starting point into successfully building a career within the events industry. I had the privilege to work on major outdoor events in this period such as the Olympic Torch Relay, Sport Relief Mile and Tour of Britain Cycling event. This experience was an invaluable stepping stone to getting my first job within the events industry.
The teaching and course structure were fantastic, giving us a mix of theoretical knowledge and gaining practical skills. The tutors were always happy to help and support us through the degree, especially through the placement. During the degree I was able to discover the type of events I wanted to work in so I was ready to apply to these positions in the summer of graduation.
Since graduation I have managed hundreds of events including outdoor sporting events, royal visits, exhibitions and conferences.
I’ve now got a fantastic job working for City, University of London working on academic conferences and events. The events industry is fantastic to work in with so much diversity and scope for career progression.
