Head of Client Services, Fellowship

After taking a short break from education, I was keen to go to university & kick-start a career – I just needed to choose a course! The varied nature of the courses at University of Suffolk jumped out to me as I still wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do once I graduated and I didn’t want to restrict myself too much. Opting for an Events & Business degree, I studied not only these subjects, but a range of modules that also included HR, Finance, Tourism & Marketing.

In terms of a university itself, Suffolk appealed to me as it struck me as modern & upcoming, it was small enough that I wouldn't just be one of many in a big lecture theatre, had great links for placement opportunities and was only 40 minutes away from home meaning I could commute & keep my current job alongside studying. I was also able to experience the university's social scene even whilst commuting – it was handy having friends living in halls for a sofa to crash on after a night out!

A mix of the course content itself and the placement opportunities prepared me beyond graduation. In my second year, I completed an internship at Ipswich Borough Council working one day per week within the Events team both on-site at events and planning at Grafton House. This then led to paid work for the remainder of my course, playing a key role in planning and delivering large scale events including the iPart and Maritime festivals and Ipswich Half Marathon. I also worked with the team at the Suffolk Whole Hog to assist with the marketing & promotion to local businesses.

Along with placements, we were also lucky enough to take a trip to Spain as part of the Tourism module, a real highlight of the course.

The inclusion of Marketing within the course content played a big role in my plans for after I graduated. I found I really enjoyed the different marketing modules in my first two years and I then specialised on this in my dissertation where I combined my love of sport with marketing.

The university left a real impression on me when it came to the point of finding myself a Graduate role. I applied for multiple graduate roles and worked with the Careers Department on a new CV and mock interviews to prepare. Within 1 month of graduating, I landed a Graduate role at a local marketing agency which has shaped my career to date. Then after a setback of redundancy, I landed a new role just 2 weeks later as an Account Manager at the same marketing agency I work at today – I truly believe that the advice and support I received from the Careers department, played a big part in being able to bounce back so quickly.

I am now Head of Client Services for a thriving marketing agency, working on exciting projects with clients across different sectors throughout the UK & beyond. I love what I do and I can say it all started with a lecture!

To anyone looking to study at the University of Suffolk, I would simply say ‘go for it’.
