Lois qualified in 1993 at the University of Essex as a registered Mental Health nurse and has worked in acute psychiatry and day centres under mental health and substance misuse services, where she was involved in delivering therapeutic programmes.  During this time Lois completed a post graduate qualification in dramatherapy, a diploma in psychodynamic counselling and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing which is used in the treatment of PTSD.  Lois has used dramatherapy and counselling throughout her time as a nurse on therapeutic programmes and been supervised by trained supervisor within her specialist fields. Lois has also worked in various other positions outside of the NHS for non governmental agencies, as an advocate for young people, as a drama therapist for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities on a theatre project and a dramatherapist on a psychiatric ward.

Teaching and Responsibilities

Lois is a Mental Health Lecturer on the Pre-Reg and Post-Reg Nursing courses. She currently is Module Leader for Post-Reg Managing Suicide and  Self-Harm and Managing Dual Diagnosis and Substance Misuse. Lois is the Mental Health Lead on the pre- registration module entitled Fundamentals of Care and on the Inter- professional learning module, the service user.  Lois is also responsible for supporting reflective practices and a high degree of self- awareness amongst the Pre-Reg Nursing students by delivering experiential sessions and exercises to increase self- development and emotional intelligence. Other teaching interest is various therapeutic interventions including counselling, reflection and family dynamics and also sociological perspectives of mental health such as empowerment of the service user, institutionalisation and the  anti-psychiatry movement.  Lois also teaches on various modules across the pre reg and foundation programme. During her time as a Lecturer, Lois has completed a year of an MA, including the research module.
