Test Professional

I’ve recently finished my 4-year Apprenticeship programme with BT, during which I completed a BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineering) at the University of Suffolk. Since finishing, I have moved into a new role as a Test Professional within BT’s Corporate Units team.

When I was in Sixth Form, I was really keen to go into Higher Education and had a real passion for both IT and design. I attended some careers fairs and events, and was really impressed by what an Apprenticeship scheme could offer, particularly the opportunity to gain real world work experience and get paid whilst completing my degree. Having both BT and UoS local to me was a real bonus, and UoS has now even opened the new DigiTech Centre at BT Adastral Park!

My Software Engineering course taught me so many of the technical skills that I may not have otherwise picked up in my day job, and the work I was doing at BT allowed me to put a lot of the fundamentals I had learnt into practice as I moved around various job roles. Before going to UoS I didn’t even know where to begin writing code, but by the end of my course I was completing a dissertation project which involved manipulating image analysis algorithms in Python to detect the dominant colours in images of products. Over the four-year degree we covered a whole range of interesting topics, from Artificial Intelligence to the Internet of Things, whilst also learning the key fundamentals of software development.

Choosing this Apprenticeship was the best decision I’ve ever made, and although at times it was hard work, it has also been so rewarding. I’m really passionate about improving user experiences, and designing software and services with end-users in mind. This passion was fuelled by both the work I did during my Apprenticeship and the modules I completed during my degree, and the experience I’ve gained so far has given me a great foundation for building a career in this field.
