The University of Suffolk has been recognised by the higher education sector by being shortlisted for two national awards.
The Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards, affectionately known as the THELMAs, are in their 10th year and are the only national awards honouring the full range of professional services and administrational talent working in universities.
The University of Suffolk has been shortlisted for ‘Outstanding Leadership and Management Team’ and for ‘Outstanding Marketing/Communications Team’.
The Outstanding Leadership and Management Team award is for a higher education institution that demonstrates the greatest breadth and depth of leadership and management skills.
The awards are for the 2016-17 year, which was the first year of the University of Suffolk as an independent university. In the category for Leadership and Management, the University was shortlisted for the introduction of the new academic strategy under the leadership of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Dastbaz, the growth in student numbers and how the leadership team worked seamlessly to navigate the university through its first year of independence.
For Marketing and Communications, the University was recognised for the already merited work of the rebranding of the University since independence and the student recruitment campaign that centred on the concept of change and ‘gamechangers’.
There are 15 categories in the awards and the winners will be announced in London in June.
Vice-Chancellor of the University Richard Lister said, “I am delighted that we have received two nominations for these prestigious and hugely competitive awards. Following our successful year of gaining independence we continue to develop rapidly as an institution. It is very pleasing that in such a huge and diverse sector we are being recognized for work of the highest quality.”
Times Higher Education Editor John Gill said, "The Thelmas are unique in shining a deserved spotlight on often unsung heroes from across the professional services and administration of our world-leading universities, and it’s an honour for Times Higher Education to organise an event celebrating their achievements. This year’s shortlist – once again featuring almost half of all UK institutions – shows that talent and dedication continue to abound, as well as a determination to find creative solutions to problems as and when they occur.”
