Suffolk’s own world-class photography festival

12 Dec 2017 9:45AM

Building on the success of the inaugural PhotoEast photography festival in 2016, PhotoEast and the University of Suffolk are delighted to announce the dates of the second festival as 24 May – 24 June 2018. Initial funding has been provided by Arts Council England. The 2018 festival theme is ‘Belonging’.

Guest curator, Emma Bowkett, picture editor of the Financial Times, will curate the Festival and the full programme of exhibitions, talks and events for the month-long celebration of photography will be announced early next year. Collaborations with Ipswich Town Football Club, Suffolk Refugee Support and Dance East, are already underway.

Also launched today (Tuesday 12 December 2017) is the PhotoEast Young Person’s Fellowship Programme.  This is an opportunity for photography students aged 16-19 in Suffolk and Norfolk to compete for participation in a unique educational experience.

Four successful applicants will be awarded a Fellowship, which includes being mentored by photography professionals, including Associate Professor Mark Edwards and other academic staff from the BA (Hons) Photography degree at the University of Suffolk, gaining industry work experience and exhibiting their work at PhotoEast in May 2018.   Aspiring photographers are invited to apply by the 26 January via the PhotoEast website.

The Biennial event is part of a wider ambition to build Suffolk’s reputation as a centre for excellence in photography.  Exhibitions, in gallery space and unconventional locations along the Ipswich Waterfront, will feature great names in contemporary photography and provide opportunities for local practitioners and audiences to showcase and engage with a diverse programme of work.

Professor Mohammad Dastbaz, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Suffolk, said “We have some very talented young people in the schools and colleges of Suffolk so we are looking forward to seeing them apply for this fantastic opportunity to be mentored by industry experts and academics from the University, and to be part of the Festival. PhotoEast 2018 promises to be a key event next summer along the Ipswich Waterfront and we are very much looking forward to being involved once again.”

PhotoEast 2018 will run from 24 May to 24 June 2018 at various locations along the Waterfront in Ipswich.  The full Festival programme will be launched in spring 2018.  For further information visit
