Hundreds of graduating students, including the inaugural cohort of Accounting and Financial Management students, received their degree awards during the first day of ceremonies to be held at the Ipswich Town Hall and Corn Exchange today.
Dr Atul K. Shah, Senior Lecturer in the Suffolk Business School, said “At the University we have a unique approach to teaching Accounting and Finance which engages students through interactive sessions, field trips and the use of multimedia in complex arenas. Our teaching approach and philosophy has been featured in The Guardian. It is therefore no surprise that our first graduates have attained such outstanding results.”
Mum of two Angela Wright from Kettleburgh near Woodbridge graduated today with a BA (Hons) in Tourism Management and Event Management. 49 year old Angela studied her degree part time alongside working at Windmill Lodges, a Suffolk based company that rents log cabins.
Angela said “I love working for a small Suffolk business. My degree has helped tremendously in gaining an excellent insight and understanding into both the tourism & event management industries. Whilst studying the modules relating to my degree I developed a keen interest in marketing and have been able to implement much of what I learned in this area to directly benefit the business I work for.”
“It’s been a life changing experience; it’s been great to be able to encourage both my son and daughter to pursue their academic studies. As a mature student I would say it is not without its challenges but what you gain from studying is really fantastic and you meet so many wonderful people. It is going to be an emotional day.”
Alongside the students picking up their degrees was BAFTA nominated actress Diana Quick. The curator of the Aldeburgh Documentary Film Festival was presented with an honorary doctorate.
1,342 students will be conferred at ceremonies in Ipswich this week. The ceremonies mark the graduation of the last full student cohort of University Campus Suffolk. Next autumn will see the conferral of the first degrees awarded by the University of Suffolk.
