About the School / Course
The School of Engineering, Arts, Science and Technology prides itself on offering excellent learning and teaching in an environment that supports world-class application focused research in the subject areas relevant to our curricula. The School has enjoyed sustained investment in teaching spaces and specialist facilities. It is housed in the modern James Hehir building (opened in 2010 with £25m investment) and the upgraded Atrium Building (opened in Sept 2016 with £5m investment). A new technology centre (The DigiTech Centre) in partnership with BT plc has opened at Adastral Park (with £9.6m investment including a state of the art Juniper networking sandpit, Cyber Range, AI Compute Server and fully equipped IT suites). It welcomed its first computing students in January 2021. Our Games facilities at the Atrium Building have also been recently upgraded as part of this investment.
The School has an established Games degree provision and this has been reconfigured to be a flagship BA (Hons) Games Development degree with two current pathways Games Design and Games Programming, giving our students extra flexibility in choosing the right route for their future career. It is likely that a Games Art pathway will be launched in the future. The Games provision sits within the wider Technology subject area of the School which includes a BSc (Hons) Computing degree, a BSc (Hons) Digital & Technology Solutions degree apprenticeship, and a MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
About the post
Consequently, the School is seeking to appoint a permanent Lecturer in Games Development to undertake teaching and research in computer games. It is expected that the successful applicant would teach on the BA (Hons) Games Development programme, and likely be initially delivering modules such as Professional Practice, Game Research Methods, Managing Games Production (Group Project), Game Jams and Portfolio. The appointee is expected to make a significant contribution to the learning, teaching, research and business engagement culture in the School. The appointee will be appointed either on the Learning Teaching and Research Pathway or Learning Teaching and Knowledge Exchange Pathway, and may move between career pathways without prejudice. A lecturer on the Learning Teaching and Research Pathway will be expected to hold “significant responsibility for research” and be credible for submission to the next REF in due course; ideally, they should be able to find some alignment in their research with the themes encompassed by the Digital Futures Institute and/or other research institutes at the University of Suffolk (https://www.uos.ac.uk/content/research-institutes). A lecturer on the Learning Teaching and Knowledge Exchange Pathway will be expected to make a contribution to business engagement activities and may deliver CPD/lifelong learning training.
About the post holder
Applications are sought from PhD qualified and/or industrially experienced candidates with excellent teaching skills, a track record in games research, games development or consultancy (in academia or industry) and the ability to attract funding to assist in the further development of the subject area.
