Lecturer in Computing (Ref:197)

Salary range: 
within range of £37,474 to £43,414 per annum

Required full time – Fixed Term (to 31 July 2025) in first instance  

The School of Engineering, Arts, Science and Technology prides itself on offering excellent learning and teaching in an environment that supports world-class application focused research in the subject areas relevant to our curricula. The School has enjoyed sustained investment in teaching spaces and specialist facilities. It is housed in the modern James Hehir building (opened in 2010 with £25m investment) and the upgraded West Building (opened in Sept 2016 with £5m investment). A new technology centre (The DigiTech Centre) in partnership with BT plc has opened at Adastral Park (with £9.6m investment including a state of the art Juniper networking sandpit, Cyber Range, AI Compute Server and fully equipped IT suites) and welcomed its first computing students in January 2021. 

The School has established a computing degree portfolio around two flagship undergraduate programmes – a BSc (Hons) Computing degree with AI, Cyber Security and Web & Mobile optional pathways, and the BSc (Hons) Digital & Technology Solutions degree apprenticeship with Software Engineer, Network Engineer, and Cyber Security Analyst specialisms and (expected from 23/24) Data Analyst specialisms. At postgraduate level, we offer a MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence conversion degree and will be adding two additional masters-level taught degrees from 23/24. 

Due to a series of internal appointments and promotions, the School is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer in Computing to undertake teaching and research in computing. Although the appointment is fixed-term in the first instance, subject to available funding, the post duration may be extended or made permanent. 

The teaching diet of the successful candidate is likely to evolve over the period, but it is currently expected that the postholder would teach modules on operating systems, distributed systems/cloud computing, and programming for mobile app development. The successful candidate should expect to be a supervisor for final-year and MSc projects and apprenticeship “synoptic projects”, and potentially may undertake some quality assurance and support work with our partner colleges. The appointee is expected to make a significant contribution to the learning, teaching, research and business engagement culture in the School of Engineering Arts Science and Technology. The appointee will be appointed either on the Learning Teaching and Research Pathway or Learning Teaching and Knowledge Exchange pathway. A lecturer on the Learning Teaching and Research Pathway will be expected to hold “significant responsibility for research” and be credible for submission to the next REF in due course; ideally, they should be able to find some alignment in their research with the themes encompassed by the Digital Futures Institute and/or other research institutes at the University of Suffolk (https://www.uos.ac.uk/content/research-institutes). A lecturer on the Learning Teaching and Knowledge Exchange pathway will be expected to make a contribution to business engagement activities and may deliver CPD/lifelong learning training. 

Applications are sought from PhD qualified and/or industrially experienced candidates with excellent teaching skills, a track record in computing research, technology development or consultancy (in academia or industry) and the ability to attract funding to assist in the further development of the subject area.
