The course is a highly interactive programme, facilitated by an experienced practising director. It provides a valuable opportunity to explore strategic leadership issues both within and beyond the organisation.
Despite its name, the course is not just for Directors, it's ideal for those new to leadership roles or those aspiring to more senior roles as well as for established Directors looking for new approaches in their leadership style.
Recent course feedback:
"Theory linked to practical experience – knowledge share. So much to learn – loads that can be applied in workplace."
During the programme, participants will gain an understanding of the key competencies required to be an effective leader, learn from their peers during discussions, and apply their knowledge during case study-based activities. Participants will assess different leadership and decision-making techniques, learn how to build and sustain high-performing teams and be able to apply their learnings to their own organisations.
On completion of the programme and the required self-directed study, all participants will be eligible to sit the IoD’s Award in Leadership for Directors exam, which is part of the IoD’s Chartered Director pathway.
The programme also includes full IoD membership for one-year, giving participants access to a wealth of benefits including ongoing CPD and a community of thousands of directors and senior leaders.
Having completed this programme, participants will be able to:
- Contrast different definitions of leadership, distinguish between leadership and management, while identifying where the leader’s role sits on that spectrum.
- Analyse the leader’s role in relation to purpose, values and strategy for a sustainable and growing business.
- Describe the value that a good awareness of self and others brings to effective leadership.
- Bring an understanding of board dynamics to the evaluation of high-performing and dysfunctional board behaviour.
- Understand the importance of the role of the director in shaping the culture and values.
- Identify how leaders create influence and impact within and beyond the organisation, and assess relevant stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Describe the benefits and challenges of leading an environmentally and socially responsible organisation.
This course is specifically tailored for existing or aspiring leaders and directors.
