Things to do on a rainy day in Ipswich

20 JANUARY 2020 - ROSE - THINGS TO DO

Rainy-day

It’s January again and that means the weather isn’t going to improve for a month or two as yet, but that leaves plenty of time to explore the town and what Ipswich has to offer. There are lots of great facilities both at the university and in the town centre so here are my top picks for things to do on a rainy day in Ipswich!

Go to the library

Useful for studying, curing boredom and expanding your brain! Both the library at the University and the library in town have a wide range of books for whatever you fancy reading. A library is one of the only places where you can hang out for free as well so why not take advantage of their facilities and just sit and read for a bit! It’s a great and easy way to pass the time when the weather is not so nice, but better yet you can take your reading outside in the summer months also! The libraries only remain open thanks to the demand we provide so take advantage of them when you can.

Go swimming

A cheap and healthy way to stay out of the rain (but not dry!) is to go swimming! There are two pools locally in Ipswich; Fore Street and Crown Pools. The Students' Union usually has vouchers for a cheaper swimming session than the regular admission, so it is worth having a chat to them to save a bit of money! Why not get your friends to come along too so that you can motivate each other to do some exercise.

Take in some culture

We have some great free facilities in Ipswich, namely the Museum, the Mansion and the Art Gallery. They are open six days a week (not Mondays) and they often have new exhibits, so it is worth having a look at what is on offer. At the moment the Mansion is still hosting the Ed Sheeran Made in Suffolk exhibit, which is free to look around so get down there while it is still open and have a look!

Go to the cinema

Ipswich also boasts two cinemas in the town centre which both offer reduced student rates, so it if there is something you have been dying to see why not spend a rainy afternoon losing yourself in a good film. It is a perfect study break!

Explore the local businesses

Ipswich may not have the biggest town centre but it is home to a lot of independent shops and cafes, which are always fun to explore and discover. I recommend exploring St Peters Street which is only a couple of minutes away from the Waterfront as it is full of local businesses and there is something that everyone will enjoy!

Take advantage of the facilities the uni has to offer

If you really don’t want to venture far in the rain then why not take advantage of what is on your doorstep! All of the University building boast areas to chill, work and get a bite to eat. I would especially recommend the new SU social space in the library building, which has plenty of room to sit, do some work or socialise using the new pool or ping pong tables!
