How to stay calm during exam season

It’s nearly end of the year and talking from experience, I can say that majority of us are very nervous and anxious to keep up with the deadlines and exam revision. Here are some tips and recommendations to keep you calm and relaxed during this stressful time.

Don’t procrastinate

Briefly: don’t leave everything to the last minute! I know it might be too late for this but try to finish as much work as possible so you can focus on other things as well. You don’t want to write three different essays in the same week. Just make a start. Type a sentence and the rest will come. Even if you only write the introduction part of your paper, you’ll know you’ve started so this will make you less stressed about the work you’re doing.

Less junk food

Since it’s the season of exams and deadlines, most of us will pull all-nighters and as a result, we’ll automatically want to eat anything and everything we see. Especially sweets, crisps, etc. As much as chocolate can make you happy (yes, it does…), eating a lot of greasy and junk food can upset your stomach and make it harder to focus on your studies. Try eating healthier snacks and eat your meals at the right time.

Don’t drink too much coffee, or tea since too much caffeine can make you go crazy. Have some fruit, protein bars and maybe some juice ready while studying. And always stay hydrated!

Try to get a healthy amount of sleep

Sleep is important. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like sleeping or having a nap here and there. I know you’re really determined to finish that paper or your revision but if you’re tired and sleepy, everything you read will soon leave your brain because your body is too tired to process things. If you feel like you can’t keep your eyes open and you’ve yawned five times in less than a minute, give yourself a break.

You deserve it (although, don’t take loads of breaks as this will distract you from finishing your work!). Stand up, take a walk or if it’s bedtime, go to bed! You’ll continue your work when you wake up and trust me, you’ll feel more focused than before.

Give yourself some credit

Don’t beat yourself up; try not to feel like a prisoner while doing work. Focus on your goals and what you’re planning on doing after graduating. Know that you’re doing the best you can and you’re doing this for yourself! Be proud of yourself because at the end of the day, you’re sitting in front of a screen and working your tired fingers to reach your goals.

Whenever you feel like giving up, take some time to dream about your goals and where you see yourself in five years. But don’t forget to come back to the real world and work for the things you want to achieve!

Make lists

When you feel like everything’s getting out of hand, stop! Don’t panic, take a breath and sit down. Start making a list of what you have to do. Add everything; your deadlines, which book you need to read, etc. Highlight the most important ones. And place it somewhere you can see while working. Because sometimes it can feel like everything’s all over the place and you don’t know what to do.

Making a list will help you stay on track and follow things easily. You can even use nice stickers to make it more colourful…

Take a break from the internet

I know we all love the internet and can spend loads of time Snapchatting or scrolling through our Instagram feed but social media can get very distracting. Try taking a break, maybe log off and only focus on your studies for a period of time.

There’s an app called Offtime which can block certain apps (such as Facebook, etc) while you focus on your studies. You can choose tailored moods to ensure that you have access to other things that you might need. Learn more about Offtime and good luck with all your studies and exams!
