Revising for your exams and thinking about coming to university in September? We understand that this can be a stressful time for you, in terms of both revision and achieving the grades you need to secure your place at uni.
We’ve pulled together some of our best tips and advice to help you through exam season and to make sure you’re on top form.
Find your technique
There’s no right or wrong way to revise! Everyone studies differently, so don’t feel like you have to have the same revision tactics as your friends. You should revise in a way that suits you best.
If you’re a visual person, try creating diagrams, colour-coded notes or flashcards.
For tactile learners, you are more hands-on, so try writing things down, re-writing notes or doing practice papers.
Auditory learners are better with sound. Try studying with a friend or talking aloud with someone. Get a friend or family member to ask you questions so you can recite your answers.
Another way of improving your memory is to teach someone else; so talk to your parents, siblings or friends about what you’re revising. (If they’re reluctant, a little bit of bribery never hurt! Buy them some chocolate or offer to listen to them in return).
Take a break
Maybe not the obvious one, but taking breaks matters! If you study all evening or all day with little to no breaks, you’re going to start losing concentration and your memory recall could suffer for it. You will also exhaust yourself and there’s a chance you won’t remember anything you’ve just revised – not ideal!
Take a 5-10 minute break every hour. Get up and leave the room you’re studying in, don’t just stay sat where you are. Go for a walk, go out in your garden, listen to some music, get something to eat or drink. It’s important to stay hydrated, eat regular meals and to get some exercise, as this reduces stress.
Sleep is also super important as it helps with concentration. Try and stick to a regular routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time.
Get rid of distractions
Getting annoyed at your phone constantly going off? It’s hard to stay focused with messages and social media at your fingertips.
We know FOMO is real (the fear of missing out) but you can last an hour without checking your phone and reward yourself by replying to some messages or having a scroll during your break (just make sure you do still leave the room/go outside/refuel too!)
Put your phone on silent, move it out of sight or use apps like SelfControl or Offtime, which can block certain apps while you focus on your studies (search for these in your App Store or Google Play).
Location is important. You need somewhere quiet and comfortable, where you won’t be disturbed. This might be your bedroom but if you can find somewhere else, do. Spending all day revising in your bedroom, only to go back in there to sleep can be counter-productive as your mind and body can associate the room with concentration, focus and possibly stress – which could affect your sleep.
Try to find another room in your house, the garden or the library to get some quality quiet time. Somewhere with natural light and a decent temperature will make it a more comfortable environment.
