How to make the most of socially distanced Freshers

1 SEPTEMBER 2020 - ROSE - STUDENT LIFE

It’s that time of year again; Freshers! This year might be slightly different to previous years but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of everything that the University and the Student Union (SU) have organised to make your transition or return to uni as easy and fun as possible!

•    Join the Facebook New Starters Group
If you aren’t already in the University New Starters Group then I recommend you check it out! It is the perfect introduction to talking to other students and finding out about events run by societies, the University and the SU! It is a great way to meet other students, discover about local events and share any questions you might have about starting uni as there are lots of students in the group who will be more than willing to help you out!

•    Follow the SU’s social media pages
Another easy way to stay up to date with all that’s going on for Freshers and other events throughout the year is to follow the SU on social media or to check out their website. Here you can find the full two-week line up for Freshers and it is also a great way to stay up to date with any other student news over the course of the academic year!

•    Explore the different societies
Sadly this year there isn’t an in person Freshers Fair but that doesn’t mean that you miss out on what the societies have to offer as the SU are running a meet the societies and sports teams event when the Freshers Fair would usually take place. Keep an eye on their website and social media for more details.

•    Seek out / interact with your course mates!
It is so easy to meet your course mates whether your lectures are online or in person! On the New Starters group it is easy to ask what other students are studying and then you will be able to see who else is on your course! I was involved in a group chat before I had started my course which will make meeting your fellow students in person or online a lot easier.

•    Get stuck in!
Your University experience is what you make of it so make sure to get stuck into as much as you can! You’ll regret it if you end up missing out!
Freshers might be a bit different to usual this year but your SU are working hard behind the scenes to make it as normal as possible for you! Stay safe everyone and good luck with starting or returning to the University.
