Freshers 2020 is here and a great lineup has been released. It will look a bit different from previous years, with some events being held online. After 3 years of enjoying the traditional Barcoda event, I’m sad to see that we will not be able to have this event, though it’s understandable in the current circumstances. However, there’s some great events this year for all students, so let’s see what we have coming up.

Explore Ipswich

While maintaining social distancing, you’ll be able to take part in a Discover Ipswich Hunt, perfect for getting to know your new area while making friends. It’s a good event to take part in with your flatmates, who you can keep in your social bubble. There is a group walk in Christchurch Park, one of my favourite parks in Ipswich. This will also be an opportunity to get to know areas of Ipswich that are perfect to hang out with friends while keeping a distance. Going a bit further, there will also be a beach walk in Felixstowe on the 27th September if you like the idea of exploring the Suffolk area a bit more.

Comedy Nights

There are two online comedy nights lined up this year, taking place on Zoom. Dave Chawner will be taking part in a stand-up comedy night on the 23rd September and the next event will take place on the 30th. Enjoy a great comedy night from the comfort of your own room, or get your flatmates to join you in your living room.

Classes

There will also be some online classes such as a Cook Along and Coffee Masterclass. My favourite looking one is the Cocktail and Mocktail class which I’m really looking forward to. As these are online, you don’t have to worry about getting someone to look after the kids or making sure you catch the last bus home.

Socials

As well as the social walks, there will be online socials which will give you the chance to meet societies, other parents and carers at the Parents Social and the Book Challenge to mention a few. On the 3rd October, there will also be a Mindfulness workshop that will allow you to learn some good relaxation techniques before the stress of uni kicks in.

It might not be the kind of Freshers you’re used to, but with the current situation, you have a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills in a new kind of Freshers week. Go onto uosunion.org for the full 2 week schedule and to get your tickets.
