EIRA stands for Enabling Innovation: Research to Application and supports innovation in the East of England by providing businesses with access to academic expertise, including consultancy and collaborative research, specialist facilities and funding. 

EIRA is a collaborative project of 7 Institutions (University of East Anglia, University of Essex, University of Kent, University of Suffolk, Norwich University of the Arts, Writtle University College and Harlow College) and they are funded through Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund until March 2021. 

#artificial intelligence, #biotechnology and #digital creative are the key focus for EIRA; however, Businesses don’t have to be based in these sectors but could be looking to develop a product or service that innovates in these areas. 

What you could win?  

EIRA are helping to support your innovative early-stage ventures. This is your chance to be awarded up to £3k of funding for your start-up business or organisation. 

Application Process

Stage 1   

You will need to fill out the 3-page application form (which we will send to you following your first discussion with #teamBEE) where you will answer key questions about your business start-up.  

  • Your Business, its aims and objectives? 
     
  • What problem are you solving?
     
  • How much EIRA Microfinance funding do you need? 
     
  • What will you use the funding for?
     
  • What do you expect to happen as a result of the funding?
     
  • Why is this important for your business?
     
  • Who are your competitors?
     
  • Who else is involved in your work?
     
  • What other help might you need?
     
  • How will you grow your business further? 

You will need to submit a 3-minute video pitch, which introduces EIRA to your Business. You must upload this video to Vimeo and ensure that it is password protected.  

Once completed, please email your application to eira@essex.ac.uk The deadline for applications is midnight on 30 June 2019. 

Stage 2 

For those ideas shortlisted, applicants will be required to present their business pitch in front of a review panel, which will comprise of different institutions from the EIRA network in July (tbc). 

Eligibility criteria 

  • All applicants must be students or alumni who have officially graduated within 3 years.  

  • Applicants can be individuals or groups. 

  • Throughout the process applicants must be legally residing in the UK. 

  • All businesses need to be registered with a business bank account by the time of funding pay out. 

  • Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and digital creative will be the main areas of focus in case of large application volumes; however, any industries are welcome to apply. 

  • This fund is not eligible for Tier 4 students. 

  • Applications must be submitted by midnight on Sunday 30 June 2019
