Innovation Bridge Case Study
Name of Company: I Can Run club
Director: Emma Talbot
Could you tell us about your company?
I set up I Can Run in September 2016 after discovering and falling in love with running. I realised there were no 'clubs' out there for people like me. A beginner, nervous, over weight, not feeling like I 'fit in' anywhere to do with 'fitness'. So after having a chat with some friends, I decided to get qualified on England Athletics 'Leadership in Running Fitness' course and launch my first beginners course.
My ethos came from my experiences and understanding that many women feel like me: We, at I Can Run, believe that all woman - regardless of their size, shape, age, ability or background should have the opportunity to run and progress with like-minded women.
We're also very proud to be partnered with Sport England's 'This Girl Can' campaign too. We all wiggle and jiggle too.
We have beginners programmes in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Needham Market and Stowmarket, Suffolk, UK, and use our beautiful local parks and green spaces to meet. We provide low cost beginners and Improver courses and free weekly group run in all locations.
Which funding opportunity did you engage with the Business Engagement and Entrepreneruship Team on?
How did you find out about funding opportunities?
Found out about it at an IWIC event
What challenges did your business face before accessing the funding?
I was a sole trader and working full time when I first started. I found it really difficult not having a 'right hand person' to bounce ideas from and to help me make decision about the direction of my business. Being paired up with Karen Hinton was brilliant. she was a runner too and completely understood me.
What did the funding help you to do?
Access the free University Academic expertise
How has the funding benefited your business and would you recommend it to other businesses?
It helped me in the very early stages to focus and not get carried away with too many things! The time spent was invaluable. Yes, I'd recommend Innovation Bridge to others.
Are you happy for this case study, your company ligo and your photo to be featured on:

Do you have anything else to add?
Being involved with the Innovation Bridge then led to me being able to access further knowledge, networking and learning by attending other IWIC events as well as being able to hire the conference rooms for training and meetings.
