This past year it is more important than ever to give back to our local communities; particularly to people who have been affected by the pandemic so today I am sharing some small ways we can support others around us and keep kindness at the forefront of our society.
- Volunteer
The most obvious but effective way to give back to others is volunteering. Are you finished for summer already and want a way to occupy your free time? Find a charity or organisation that you feel passionate about and reach out to them! They will be grateful for your interest and support and you can give back to the community whilst also supporting a cause that means something to you personally.
- Shop small
Many small businesses have been hit hardest in the past year and may have been unable to survive with a lack of business, which directly hits creative individuals in our community who themselves want to give back to others through their services. If we all keep local businesses at the forefront of our minds when shopping we are supporting a more sustainable cause and directly benefiting the people who run the companies themselves. What’s not to love?!
- Random acts of kindness
Giving back to others doesn’t have to cost a thing and random acts of kindness are prime examples of this. These gestures can be big or small, from smiling at a stranger or complimenting someone’s outfit - whatever you choose to do the important part of this is giving kindness back to others and maybe even making someone’s day.
- Donate to charity
Again this doesn’t have to be monetary! Sort through your old clothes or belongings and if you don’t use them donate them to someone who will! This can range from a friend to a local charity shop but know that your unwanted items will benefit someone else greatly.
- Contact those who need it most
Loneliness has been a pandemic itself in the past year so it is more important than ever to keep in contact with those you love, and maybe even strangers too! Many local charities and businesses have set up ‘phone a friend’ schemes which you can easily sign up to and utilise as a way to talk to others when we are unable to see each other closely. Another form of volunteering this could be an easy and useful way to give back to others who need it most.
However you give back to others, this year has taught us a lot but mostly that we are stronger together and unity will help us all through these difficult times. And remember in a world where you can be anything, be kind.
